Understanding an open electrical circuit
This illustration belongs to the Primary Seven Integrated Science topic Electricity and Magnetism.
- The drawing shows a dry cell, connecting wires, bulb and an open switch.
- An open switch breaks the conducting path. Current cannot flow around the complete loop, so the bulb stays off.
- Closing the switch would complete the path, allowing current to flow through a working bulb supplied by the dry cell.
Classroom safety: Use low-voltage dry cells for classroom circuit demonstrations. Never connect this diagram directly to household mains electricity.
