Long Distance Trade and Slave Trade in East Africa Notes
0 views 0 downloads 0 shares 3 October 2026

These history notes cover the pre-colonial long distance (caravan) trade between the peoples of the East African interior and Arab, Swahili, Indian and other traders at the coast. They explain why the trade grew and how caravans, trade routes, trading centres and money were organised. They describe the parts played by the Nyamwezi, Akamba and Yao, then list the trade's political, economic and social effects and the reasons it declined. A set of essay-style revision questions follows. The notes then move on to the East African slave trade, covering why it grew, how it was organised and what effects it had.
