These Senior Six economics notes cover the public sector in Uganda. They define public enterprises, public corporations and parastatal organisations, and explain why governments set them up. The notes go through how public enterprises contribute to development, their disadvantages, and the problems they face in Uganda. They then cover privatisation, including its forms (divestiture, joint ventures, leasing, concessioning and repossession), the reasons behind it, and its advantages and disadvantages. They also look at problems that arose during Uganda's privatisation process. The final section introduces structural adjustment programmes linked to IMF lending. Ugandan examples such as NWSC, NSSF and Bank of Uganda appear throughout, which makes the notes useful for A-level revision.
