0 views 0 downloads 0 shares 3 October 2026

These notes describe the contributions of African societies to long-distance trade, naming the Yao, Nyamwezi, Akamba, Baganda and Banyoro. They identify the groups controlling the central, southern and northern routes and outline their work as middlemen, suppliers and buyers of goods. Other roles include guiding and guarding traders, interpreting, organising caravans and carrying goods. The material also mentions commercial treaties, taxation, raids on neighbouring communities, food and accommodation, care for sick traders and recruitment of participants. Presented as brief slide-style points, the resource is credited to Nangoma Druscilla of Trinity College Nabbingo.
