Middle Class Reading Scheme of Work – Term 1 (Phonics and Sounds)

This is a Term 1 reading scheme of work for Middle Class nursery learners aged four to five. It falls under the learning area on developing and using language appropriately. Over ten weeks it plans lessons that introduce letter sounds through storylines and actions. The sounds are s, a, t, i, p, n, e, o, u, c, k, h, r, d and ck, together with the five vowels. Each lesson lists competences, teaching methods, life skills and values, learner activities, teaching aids and references such as Jolly Phonics. Learners move from recognising sounds to blending syllables and then reading simple words and short sentences.
